IWC is an independent community legal aid clinic, begun in 1969 with the help of Al Baldwin, an injured worker activist. The office survived on various grants until, as recommended by 1974 government-appointed Task Force, Ontario's Legal Aid Plan began funding neighbourhood/community legal clinics. Since 1976 Legal Aid Ontario is our only source of funds. Clinic administration is the responsibility of the staff collective and a community-based board of directors (injured workers and injured worker advocates).

The clinic's services are free of charge. The office has eight caseworkers and two support staff. There are financial eligibility limits set by legal aid. Demand for assistance exceeds our resources. We often provide self-help information and make referrals to other organizations providing free legal assistance. We consider ourselves to be a community legal clinic and strive to involve injured workers in the struggle for justice and in all aspects of the clinic's work, which includes casework, public education, law reform and organizing. [For further information on the community development role and activities of legal clinics, see Ontario Project for Inter-Clinic Community Organizing]

The clinic hosts meetings of injured worker support groups and the 'Bright Lights' injured workers who have been meeting at the clinic for education and action for many years.

Many of our activities are done jointly with other injured worker organizations, advocacy groups and unions, including the Ontario Network of Injured Worker Groups (ONIWG), the Canadian Injured Worker Alliance (CIWA), the Toronto Injured Worker Advocacy Group (TIWAG), the Ontario Legal Clinic Workers' Compensation Network. IWC also participates with injured workers, academic and other community organizations in worker-centred research projects.
